Hyphen, based in Bangalore is looking for various full-time positions. Hyphen is an initiative of Bahuvachana which is a non-profit, charitable organisation that supports literary translations, theatre, and the arts.
POSITION: Associate Editor – Publishing & Digital
Hyphen is looking for an editor (4–5 years experience) to help build a dynamic list of Indian language writing in English translation. You will work in a fast-moving, collaborative environment—shaping manuscripts, working with translators, and bringing important voices to new readers.
Responsibilities
● Shape translated manuscripts for clarity, rhythm, and literary impact—while preserving the integrity of the original voice
● Plan, create, and manage content for the website, ensuring consistency in tone and quality
● Work closely with translators to navigate nuance, context, and cultural subtleties
● Lead projects end-to-end, from manuscript development to final proof, in collaboration with design and production teams
● Discover and champion new writing, translators, and ideas across Indian languages
● Build and sustain meaningful relationships with authors, translators, and the broader literary community
Eligibility Criteria
● 4–5 years of editorial experience in publishing, magazines, or literary platforms, with a demonstrable track record of working on long-form or literary content
● Exceptional command of English, with strong copyediting and line-editing skills; familiarity with at least one Indian language (reading ability preferred)
● A sustained interest in translation and Indian literatures, with some exposure to translated works—editorial, academic, or personal
● Proven ability to engage closely with texts—shaping structure, refining voice, and strengthening narrative flow while respecting authorial intent
● Experience managing projects independently, including coordinating with multiple stakeholders (translators, designers, production teams) and meeting deadlines
● Strong organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple manuscripts or projects simultaneously without compromising quality
● Editorial sensitivity to cultural nuance, context, and linguistic diversity
● Comfort with digital publishing workflows; experience planning or producing web content is a plus
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially in working collaboratively with writers and translators
● A curious, well-read sensibility and an openness to discovering new voices, forms, and literary traditions
