1. Role Purpose
The Manufacturing & Business Excellence role sits within the Strategy function and is accountable for driving cross-divisional operational excellence, productivity improvement, cost optimisation, business transformation programs and assisting Business Heads with strategic initiatives & global partnerships across all business divisions of Walchandnagar Industries Limited (WIL). The role acts as an internal consultant to the leadership team — diagnosing performance gaps, designing improvement roadmaps, and partnering with Plant Heads, Engineering Design, Tool Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and Project Management teams to deliver measurable impact on throughput, cost, quality, delivery and capital efficiency.
2. Organisational Context
WIL is a 100+ year old heavy engineering and hi-tech manufacturing company with a diversified portfolio spanning Nuclear, Aerospace, Missile & Defence, Sugar Plants, Cement Plants, Bulk Material Handling, Heavy-Duty Gears, Centrifugals, Castings and Precision Instrumentation. The role demands deep familiarity with each of these business divisions, their unique manufacturing characteristics, customer base, regulatory environment and competitive landscape.
3. Key Responsibilities1. Strategic Diagnostics & Excellence Roadmap
• Conduct end-to-end manufacturing and business diagnostics across WIL’s business divisions — identifying value-loss areas across OEE, cycle time, cost-of-poor-quality, inventory, throughput, tooling utilisation and project execution.
• Develop a 3–5 year Manufacturing & Business Excellence roadmap aligned with WIL’s corporate strategy, capex plan and order book.
• Translate strategic objectives into measurable KPIs and cascade them to division and plant level.
2. Cross-Divisional Program Management
• Lead enterprise-wide excellence programs covering Lean, Six Sigma, TPM, 5S, SMED, theory of constraints and digital manufacturing initiatives.
• Govern a portfolio of improvement projects across Nuclear, Aerospace & Defence, Sugar, Boilers, Cement, Gears, Foundry (Satara) and Instrumentation (Dharwad) divisions.
• Establish PMO-style cadence — charters, gate reviews, benefit tracking, financial validation in coordination with Finance.
4. Engineering Design & Tool Design Excellence
• Leverage Engineering Design / Tool Design expertise to drive Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM), Design-for-Cost (DFC) and Design-for-Assembly (DFA) interventions across divisions.
• Partner with Engineering Design teams to standardise components, modularise sub-assemblies, and rationalise the tooling and fixture base across plants.
• Identify and execute tooling, jig and fixture improvements that reduce setup time, improve dimensional accuracy and lower per-unit manufacturing cost — particularly for hi-tech and critical-tolerance components in the Nuclear, Aerospace and Defence divisions.
4. Business Performance Analytics & Benchmarking
• Build and maintain divisional performance dashboards (margin, asset turns, on-time delivery, working capital, NPS / customer complaints).
• Benchmark WIL’s divisions against best-in-class internal and external peers; identify white spaces and improvement levers.
• Support the leadership team with data-driven inputs for Board reviews, MIS, Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and capital allocation decisions.
5. Capability Building & Change Management
• Build internal excellence capability through training, certification (Yellow / Green / Black Belt), and a community-of-practice across plants and divisions.
• Coach Plant Heads, Functional Heads and project teams on excellence methodologies and problem-solving.
• Drive cultural change toward a continuous-improvement and fact-based decision-making mindset.
6. Strategic Initiatives Support
• Support the Strategy team on special projects — new business case evaluation, make-vs-buy, footprint optimisation, capex justification, M&A integration support and strategic supplier programs.
• Represent the Strategy function in cross-functional steering committees and customer-facing forums where required.
4. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
• Realised savings (₹ Cr) from excellence programs, financially validated
• Improvement in plant-level OEE / throughput across target divisions
• Reduction in Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) and rework / scrap
• Reduction in manufacturing lead time and project execution cycle time
• Inventory turns and working-capital improvement
• % of divisions covered by active excellence programs
• Number of certified Green / Black Belts developed
• On-time delivery and schedule adherence on identified critical projects
5. Candidate Profile5.1 Must-have Qualifications & Experience
• M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from a reputed institute (B.Tech / B.E. Mechanical at undergraduate level).
• 7–10 years of post-qualification experience in Engineering Design and/or Tool Design functions in a heavy engineering, capital goods, defence, aerospace, automotive or similar discrete manufacturing environment.
• Strong fundamentals in machine design, strength of materials, manufacturing processes and engineering drawing practices.
• Preferred knowledge in 3D CAD modelling and 2D drafting tools – Creo / SolidWorks / Siemens NX / AutoCAD / CATIA (any combination).
• Demonstrated knowledge of, or strong willingness to rapidly develop deep familiarity with, ALL business divisions of Walchandnagar Industries — Nuclear, Aerospace, Missile & Defence, Sugar, Boilers, Cement, Mineral Processing, Bulk Material Handling, Gears, Centrifugals, Castings and Instrumentation.
• Working knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma and continuous improvement methodologies; formal Green Belt / Black Belt certification preferred.
5.2 Desirable Qualifications
• Prior exposure to a Strategy, PMO, Engineering Design, Manufacturing Excellence or Business Excellence role.
• MBA / PGDM or executive education in General Management / Operations Strategy from a reputed institute.
• Exposure to ISO 9001, AS 9100, ASME, nuclear-grade quality systems (e.g., NPCIL / BARC requirements) and defence quality requirements.
• Familiarity with ERP systems (SAP preferred), MES, and manufacturing analytics tools.
• Project management certification (PMP / Prince2) is an added advantage.
5.3 Skills & Competencies
• Strong systems thinking and structured problem-solving ability.
• Strong analytical and data-handling skills — comfort with large operational datasets, Excel modelling, BI tools.
• Excellent stakeholder management — ability to influence senior leaders and shop-floor teams alike.
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to prepare executive-grade presentations and Board notes.
• High personal ownership, ability to drive outcomes through matrixed teams without direct reporting authority.
• Willingness to travel extensively to plants and project sites.
