Let’s keep it simple: If you haven’t shipped a Shopify app that real merchants depend on daily, this isn’t the right role yet.

We are not looking for someone who only built storefronts, customized themes, or has theoretical knowledge. We’re looking for someone who built a functional app, put it in front of live users (merchants), and dealt with the operational realities.

• What happened next? Did you get bug reports about installation failures, complex webhook errors, billing issues, or performance drops?

• Client services work counts only if you maintained the app after launch and dealt with production-level issues. Storefront or theme development does not count.

What This Is

We build proprietary Shopify app products (internal IP in the commerce SaaS space) to solve recurring operational gaps for fashion, beauty, and luxury brands.

You won’t be maintaining someone else’s legacy codebase or working through a backlog of pre-scoped tickets.

You’ll own product features end-to-end → from understanding what the merchant needs, translating that into technical architecture, to writing the React/Node.js code, and monitoring its performance in production.

This is not a large team with layers of review. You’ll ship code that matters, break things occasionally, and fix them. If that sounds stressful, this isn’t the role. If it sounds like the fastest way to get better at building scalable software, it is.

• You’ll learn fast. Small team, live merchants, production responsibility. You’ll improve more in 6 months here than in 2 years maintaining external client themes.

• You’ll own products, not tickets. The apps you build have your decisions embedded in them. Merchants interact with your code daily.

• Real Upside. Early product team members receive favorable compensation terms as the app portfolio generates revenue.

What You’ll Do

• Build Full-Stack App Features. Not just the UI: the whole feature. This includes state management (React/Polaris), API integration (GraphQL), secure OAuth flows, merchant session handling, and permission scopes. One person, full ownership.

• Design & Build Backend Systems. Develop backend services (Node.js/TypeScript) for app capabilities. You’ll manage webhook processing, scheduled jobs, background tasks, and ensuring event-driven logic is scalable and reliable.

• Ship to Production. Not just to dev: to real merchants on the Shopify App Store. That means understanding the app review lifecycle, handling app plan and subscription logic, and managing post-launch maintenance.

• Debug Production Issues. Merchants will report bugs. You’ll trace through logs, reproduce the issue across different merchant environments, fix the issue across the full stack (frontend, backend, integrations), and push an update.

• Optimize Scalability. Apps need to reliably handle high volumes of orders, inventory events, and webhooks. You’ll profile app-side systems and ensure they are scalable and maintainable.

• Work with the Product Side. Someone will say “merchants need to be able to do X.” You’ll ask clarifying questions, propose a technical design, build it, and iterate based on merchant feedback. No handoff culture → you own the outcome.

What We Need From You

• You’re comfortable with the core tech stack. Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, and React. Experience with databases and ORM tools (Prisma).

• You’ve shipped a production Shopify app.

• Tell us about it in your application: how many active merchants, what the app does, what broke, and what you got to learn about the Shopify ecosystem.

• You know the Shopify Platform. Strong understanding of the ecosystem, merchant workflows, Admin API (GraphQL/webhooks), and OAuth.

• You ship code that other people can read. Clean variable names, reasonable file structure, comments where things are non-obvious.

• You can debug independently. When something breaks, you read the error, check the webhook logs, reproduce it locally, and narrow it down across the full stack.

Main Objective: Not perfect → shipped products must be scalable, secure, and maintainable.

Nice To Have

• Exposure to advanced extensibility features (Shopify Functions, Checkout UI Extensions).

• Experience integrating with messaging platforms (Slack, Discord) or other external systems.

• Familiarity with cloud deployment environments (Fly.io, Railway, AWS).

• Understanding of ecommerce operations, merchant pain points, and D2C workflows.

What We’re Not Looking For

• Someone who needs constant supervision or detailed instructions for every task.

• Someone who’s only comfortable working on greenfield projects (production means bugs, legacy decisions, and live merchant constraints).

• Someone looking for a client services role.

• Someone looking for top-market salary right now → we’re building, compensation grows with what we build.

• Someone who hasn’t shipped a production app yet → build and ship something first, then apply.
