Director, Data Engineering & Platforms Full Time

This is a senior technology leadership role focused on building and scaling modern enterprise data and AI platforms within a global, science-driven organization. You will lead the design and evolution of an Azure-based data ecosystem that powers analytics, AI-driven insights, and operational intelligence across business and research functions. Acting as both a strategic leader and hands-on technical expert, you will shape architecture decisions, drive platform modernization, and ensure scalability, security, and cost efficiency. The role also combines people leadership responsibilities, including managing distributed engineering teams and supporting global follow-the-sun operations. You will collaborate closely with business, IT, and global stakeholders to translate complex scientific and operational needs into robust data solutions. Accountabilities

In this role, you will provide strategic and technical leadership for enterprise data and analytics platforms while ensuring operational excellence across global teams. You will define architecture standards, drive modernization initiatives, and oversee the delivery of scalable and secure data solutions. You will also lead distributed engineering teams, ensuring alignment with global operating models and business priorities.

• Lead the design, development, and optimization of Azure-based enterprise data platforms, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance
• Define and drive data architecture strategy across Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Data Factory, Synapse/Fabric, and related services
• Manage and mentor globally distributed data engineering and platform teams, including follow-the-sun operations
• Oversee platform operations, incident management, and continuous improvement of data services
• Drive adoption of DevOps, DataOps, and MLOps practices to enhance automation and delivery efficiency
• Partner with business and IT stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable data and AI solutions
• Ensure security, compliance, and governance standards are embedded across all data platforms
• Optimize cloud infrastructure costs while maintaining performance and availability
• Support innovation in AI/GenAI use cases, including data ingestion, summarization, and analytics enablement

Requirements

This role requires a seasoned technology leader with deep expertise in cloud data platforms, particularly within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem. You should bring strong experience in building large-scale data engineering systems, leading global teams, and driving enterprise transformation initiatives. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills are essential for success in this highly collaborative environment.

• 12+ years of experience in information technology, with significant leadership exposure
• 7+ years of hands-on experience building and managing Azure data platforms (e.g., Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Data Factory, Azure SQL, Fabric, Power BI)
• 7+ years of experience managing data engineering and analytics teams in global or enterprise environments
• Strong expertise in cloud architecture, data warehousing, and analytics engineering
• Proven experience in follow-the-sun operations and incident management at scale
• Strong understanding of DevOps, Infrastructure-as-Code, and platform automation practices
• Experience working with AI/ML or GenAI-enabled data solutions is highly desirable
• Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, and executive communication skills
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
