Title: Lead Software Engineer – D365 F&O

Job Summary

Caterpillar is seeking strong technical leadership in solution architecture and team management to deliver enterprise‑grade ERP solutions. The ideal candidate will lead end‑to‑end implementations, design scalable and secure systems, and drive integrations across enterprise platforms.

We are looking for expertise in X++ development, Dynamics 365 F&O technical architecture, and integration strategies. The successful candidate will confidently engage in technical discussions, shape implementation strategies, and contribute to D365 F&O template creation. They will ensure seamless deployments, optimized performance, and effective integrations, while mentoring engineers and guiding teams toward delivery excellence.

What You Will Do

This role will lead the end‑to‑end design, development, and delivery of scalable enterprise solutions across Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement and Finance & Operations. Responsibilities span multiple modules, including Finance, Supply Chain Management, Project Operations and Commerce. The Solution Architect will be accountable for designing, building, and implementing complex solutions that integrate seamlessly across these Dynamics 365 applications, ensuring scalability, performance, and business value.

Key Responsibilities Include

Enterprise Architecture Leadership

• Lead technical delivery of Dynamics 365 F&O implementations, upgrades, integrations, and customizations.
• Architect robust, scalable, and secure technical solutions using Agile methods, aligned with business requirements.
• Collaborate closely with functional leads, project managers, and external partners to ensure technical strategy supports business goals.

Development & Customization

• Own and drive X++ development, customizations, and extensions using best practices.
• Customization and extension development using X++, Visual Studio, and the D365 Extension framework.
• Oversee code quality, performance optimization, and technical governance.
• Ensure adherence to Microsoft D365 standards, extensibility framework, and upgrade‑safe customizations.

Integration Design & Delivery

• Design and implement integrations with third‑party systems using:
• OData
• REST / SOAP APIs
• AIF / DMF
• Azure Logic Apps, Service Bus, Data Factory
• Dual Write
• Collaborate with functional consultants, project managers, and vendor partners to align solutions with business needs.

Data, Security & Compliance

• Support data migration strategies and execution using DMF / Data Management Framework, acting as the primary technical SPOC.
• Experience with security roles & privileges, workflows, batch jobs, and performance tuning.
• Review technical designs, code, and deployment strategies to ensure compliance with best practices, performance standards, and security guidelines.

Reusable Assets & Frameworks

• Develop reusable templates, frameworks, and accelerators to standardize solution delivery.
• Drive automation initiatives using Copilot Studio, AI Builder, and AI‑driven workflows.

DevOps & Release Management

• Strong knowledge of DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, D365 templates, and environment management for F&O projects.
• Manage build, release, and deployment activities across environments.
• Oversee Lifecycle Services (LCS) and Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC), managing code branches, build pipelines, and releases across Dev/UAT/Prod environments.
• Estimate and monitor development costs based on functional and technical requirements.

Effective Communications

• Confidently engage in technical discussions, implementation strategies, and template creation.
• Mentor engineering teams, fostering innovation and delivery excellence.
• Lead workshops, demos, and discussions with finance, supply chain, IT, and dealer stakeholders.
• Present and negotiate effectively to align different teams and priorities.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

• Stay current with Microsoft technologies, Azure services, and industry trends to inform strategic decisions.
• Ensure adherence to best practices in software engineering, DevOps, and solution governance.

What You Will Have

Software Development

• Deep hands‑on experience with Dynamics 365 F&O modules (Finance, Supply Chain, Project Operations), with a proven track record of leading large‑scale enterprise software projects.
• Expert‑level knowledge of X++ and .NET (C#), with strong understanding of D365 F&O layered architecture, Data Entities, and OData/REST APIs.
• Provides consulting on developer workbench tools and upgrade‑safe customizations.

Software Development Life Cycle

• Describes similarities and differences between life cycle for new product development vs. new release.
• Works with formal life cycle methodologies, agile practices, and performance tuning strategies.
• Interprets product development plans and functional documentation, ensuring alignment with business goals.

Software Integration Engineering

• Skilled in integration strategies between F&O, CE, third‑party apps, and legacy systems.
• Designs and implements data exchange interfaces using OData, APIs, and Azure services (Logic Apps, Service Bus, Data Factory).
• Experienced with Common Data Services (Dual Write) for integration with Dynamics 365 Sales, Field Service, and Project Operations.
• Describes tools and techniques for extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of electronic data.

Software Product Design / Architecture

• Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, agile methodologies, and performance optimization.
• Analyzes benefits and drawbacks of specific software designs and architectural alternatives.
• Provides guidance on strategic areas such as ALM, environment strategy, integration strategy, data migration strategy, and security strategy.

DevOps & Release Management

• Expertise in Azure DevOps: Git, pipelines, CI/CD, release management, and test plans.
• Oversees Lifecycle Services (LCS) and Power Platform Admin Center (PPAC), managing code branches, build pipelines, and releases across Dev/UAT/Prod environments.
• Skilled in environment management, monitoring release dependencies, and ensuring compliance with Microsoft standards.

Data & AI Solutions

• Proficiency in SQL Server Management Studio and data migration tools (DMF).
• Ability to design and deliver AI‑powered ERP solutions using Copilot Studio and AI Builder.
• Extensive experience with data architecture, solution frameworks, and reusable accelerators.
• Innovation & Continuous Improvement
• Stays current with Microsoft technologies, Azure microservices, and industry trends to inform strategic decisions.

Considerations For Top Candidates

• Expert‑level experience with Dynamics 365 development F&O
• Expert‑level experience with Microsoft development stack X++
• Expert‑level experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD, and Azure microservices.
• Extensive experience with Microsoft Fabric.
• Extensive experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and SQL.
• Strong knowledge of integration strategies (OData, REST APIs, DMF, Dual Write).
• Working knowledge of Azure tenant and environment management.
• Experience collaborating with ISVs and IPs, and integrating CE with F&O using Common Data Services (Dual Write)
• Working knowledge of integration development.

Experience

• 12–15+ years of demonstrated work experience in ERP technologies with 10+ years in Dynamics 365 F&O/AX in ERP/CRM technical development.
• Proven experience as a Technical Lead or Solution Architect in at least 8 full-cycle D365 F&O implementations.

Certifications (Preferred)

• MB 700: Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations Solution Architect Expert
• MB 500: Finance & Operations Apps Developer
• PL 600: Microsoft Power Platform Solution Architect
