Senior DevOps Engineer – SDLC

Overview of role:

The Senior SDLC Engineer will play a key role in developing and enhancing Bupa’s Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) tool ecosystem, ensuring it delivers a seamless and efficient experience for engineering teams across the business. This role focuses on implementing, integrating, and optimizing SDLC tools and processes to support consistent, high-quality software delivery. Working closely with the SDLC Product Manager and other stakeholders, the role holder will contribute technical expertise to evolve the ecosystem, drive automation, and improve developer workflows. The position requires strong collaboration across development, QA, security, and operations teams to ensure that SDLC tools meet functional, compliance, and performance requirements, enabling Bupa to deliver world-class products and services.

• Enhance SDLC Tooling and Processes: Design and improvement of SDLC tools and workflows, ensuring they support efficient software delivery and align with organizational standards.
• Implement Scalable Solutions: Develop and configure SDLC tools such as CI/CD pipelines, source control systems, and deployment automation to improve reliability and performance.
• Drive Automation Across the SDLC: Introduce and maintain automation for build, test, release, and deployment processes using industry-standard tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps.
• Support Standards and Best Practices: Apply and promote best practices for branching strategies, code quality checks, security scanning, and configuration management within the SDLC ecosystem.
• Integrate and Optimize Tooling: Integrate tools for code analysis, vulnerability scanning, artifact management, and release orchestration to streamline developer workflows.
• Monitor and Improve Performance: implement monitoring and reporting for SDLC tools to identify issues, track usage, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with development, QA, security, and operations teams to ensure SDLC tools meet functional and compliance requirements.
• Support Change and Release Activities: Plan and execute changes and releases for SDLC tools, ensuring updates are tested and deployed with minimal disruption.
• Champion Developer Experience: Deliver ideas and improvements that simplify processes and enhance productivity for engineering teams using SDLC tools.
• Stay Current with SDLC Trends: Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and practices in DevOps and SDLC tooling, applying relevant innovations to improve the ecosystem.

Core Bupa IT JFF Aligned Responsibilities for a Senior Engineer 2 – DevOps:

• As a member of the Engineering Profession within the DevOps Discipline, this role holder will be expected to design implement and maintain scalable infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines to support fast and reliable software delivery. The will also automate processes, monitor system performance, and ensure high availability across all environments.
• Programming & Development (SFIA Level 4 – PROG): Designs, develops, tests, and improves complex programs and scripts, ensuring high-quality and secure outcomes. Contributes to selecting appropriate tools, methods, and security practices, and participates in code reviews to maintain standards.
• Systems & Lifecycle Engineering (SFIA Level 4 – SLEN): Gathers requirements for automation and lifecycle processes and proposes design options for tools and workflows. Selects best practices for software components and microservices and applies automation to deliver secure, well-engineered solutions.
• Configuration Management (SFIA Level 2 – CFMG): Manages configuration items by tracking, logging, and reporting changes. Supports audits to verify accuracy and takes corrective action when needed.
• Requirements Management (SFIA Level 3 – REQM): Defines and prioritizes requirements for small-scale changes and assists with larger initiatives. Documents requirements clearly, checks for errors, and maintains traceability while managing change requests in line with policy.
• Release Management (SFIA Level 4 – RELM): Plans and schedules software releases to meet business objectives, coordinating activities across teams. Oversees the release lifecycle to ensure quality, security, and compliance, communicates progress, and conducts post-release reviews for improvement.
• Testing (SFIA Level 3 – TEST): Designs and executes test cases and scripts, creating test plans based on requirements and design reviews. Applies standards for manual and automated testing, builds test coverage through automation, and reports on results and risks.
• Deployment (SFIA Level 4 – DEPL): Plans and executes deployments of complex software updates using automation tools and techniques. Maintains and optimizes deployment processes for reliability and security while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
• Change Control (SFIA Level 5 – CHMG): Leads the assessment, documentation, and implementation of changes, developing plans for complex requests. Reviews risks, ensures proper approvals, evaluates effectiveness, and recommends tools and processes for improved change control.
• Personal Development: Builds personal capability through training, development activities, and professional accreditation. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technology, regulations, and best practices through continuous learning and industry engagement.

Autonomy, Scope, Level, and Scale of Role:

• The role holder will be expected will be expected to deliver against a clear set of goals through carefully analyzing problems / situations / information and deciding on the best course of action.
• Will achieve success through developing strong relationships broad range and depth of stakeholders across Bupa Technology and the business up to and including Director / CIO Level.
• Will collaborate with other Bupa engineering teams and be required at times to influence at peer level.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

• Solid years of experience in DevOps / Platform Engineering roles, with a focus on SDLC tooling and automation in enterprise environments.

Strong hands-on expertise with:

• GitHub Enterprise (Admin-level).
• GitHub Actions (workflow design, reusable actions, security).
• Self-hosted GitHub Runners (preferably on Kubernetes).
• GitHub Org RBAC.
• GitHub Teams and Repository automation.
• JFrog Artifactory administration and automation.
• Deep understanding of CI/CD principles, branching models, and SDLC methodologies.
• Experience developing reusable workflow templates, shared actions, and automation frameworks.
• Experience optimizing large enterprise CI/CD pipelines.
• Solid experience with Kubernetes (AKS/EKS/GKE), Docker, and container orchestration.
• Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python, or PowerShell).
• Experience with IaC tools (Terraform, Helm, Kustomize).
• Experience implementing DevSecOps tools—secret management, code scanning, dependency scanning, etc.
• Experience with Jira Software: workflow schemes, screens, issue type hierarchies/epics, custom fields, permission & notification schemes, automation rules.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS/GCP).
• Familiarity with software lifecycle processes and best practices for continuous integration and delivery in complex environments.
• Strong capability to troubleshoot issues within SDLC pipelines and tooling, identify root causes, and implement sustainable solutions.

Nice to Have:

• Experience operating build agent fleets at scale.
• Familiarity with incident management and SRE practices.
• Experience with Atlassian REST APIs, webhooks, Forge/Connect apps, and marketplace add-ons (e.g., ScriptRunner) for provisioning and workflow automation.
