AI & Sustainability Specialist
Environmental Management Centre Pvt Ltd (EMC)
Position type: Full-time
Location: Mumbai
Application deadline: June 19, 2026
The future of sustainability lies in its integration with artificial intelligence. As organisations move from disclosure to genuine performance, AI is fast becoming the engine that turns sustainability data into insight, more sustainability maturity, faster and better decisions, and measurable impact. At EMC, we believe the next decade of environmental and ESG practice will be defined by how intelligently and how responsibly this integration is done. We are looking for someone to help us build that future.
We are looking for a motivated, curious, and purpose-driven individual who sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability. This is not a purely technical role. It equally demands sustainability thinking, creative problem-solving, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. You will work closely with EMC’s sustainability specialists and leadership to research, design, prototype, and iterate on a portfolio of AI-powered sustainability solutions.
Key Responsibilities
• Work alongside EMC’s sustainability specialists and leadership to identify where AI can add value, understand client needs, and translate domain expertise into clear product and platform requirements.
• Help research, design, prototype, and iterate on a range of AI-powered sustainability applications across EMC’s portfolio — from agentic copilots and AI-assisted learning tools to sustainability assessment and analytics platforms.
• Research and integrate AI/ML techniques relevant to EMC’s sustainability consulting practice.
• Contribute to vibe-coding sessions, rapid, exploratory prototyping of new ideas using AI-assisted coding tools, in line with EMC’s commitment to strategic innovation.
• Support testing, documentation, and continuous improvement of deployed tools, keeping them reliable and aligned with EMC’s responsible AI policy.
Qualifications & Educational BackgroundFormal Education
• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology
• Formal academic training in sustainability is not a prerequisite. EMC values passion, intellectual curiosity, and a demonstrated interest in the field over formal credentials alone.
• Candidates with a strong aspiration to pursue postgraduate studies in AI and Sustainability Science, Sustainability Management, or closely related programmes are strongly encouraged to apply. EMC actively invests in the learning and development of its team members.
Experience Level
• This role is designed for early-career professionals (typically 0–3 years of experience) who are eager to grow within EMC’s culture of mentorship-driven development.
Required Skills & CompetenciesTechnical Skills
• Familiarity with software system design fundamentals, including user authentication, session management, and relational / non-relational databases. A solid grasp of the foundations and the enthusiasm to learn further is entirely sufficient; deep expertise is not required at the point of joining.
• Familiarity with full-stack web development basics: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a working understanding of frameworks such as ReactJS and Next.js. The ability and willingness to learn more is valued equally with existing experience.
• Familiarity with Git and GitHub for version control, or a clear commitment to becoming proficient quickly.
• Openness and enthusiasm for vibe-coding — using AI-assisted tools (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) to prototype and explore solutions rapidly, even in unfamiliar territory.
AI & Sustainability Knowledge
• Understanding of core AI/ML concepts and the ability to apply them to real-world sustainability challenges, consistent with EMC’s responsible AI policy.
• Awareness of major sustainability and ESG reporting frameworks (GRI, BRSR, TCFD, SBTi, UN SDGs, Circular Economy principles) is a plus; comprehensive knowledge is not required at joining.
• Ability to critically assess environmental data, identify trends, and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Soft Skills & Mindset
• Genuine passion for sustainability and a long-term career commitment to the field, aligned with EMC’s core value of Sustainability Leadership.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Comfortable working in a flat, non-hierarchical, agile environment with evolving requirements.
• A collaborative team player who can also work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision that is a core to how EMC’s multidisciplinary teams function.
Why Join EMC?
EMC’s former team members consistently describe it as the most formative experience of their professional lives. Here is what you can expect:
• Direct mentorship from experienced sustainability consultants and technologists with 30 years of national and international project experience.
• A flat, open, and informal culture where every team member — regardless of seniority — is heard and their contributions valued.
• National and international project exposure across EMC’s verticals: ESG, Circular Economy, Climate Change, and Environmental & Social Impact Assessment.
• A genuine path to a Master’s degree: for young professionals who join us, EMC actively supports your move into postgraduate study in AI, Sustainability Science, or a related field as part of your growth with us.
• Significant career growth: for those serious about building a career with us, EMC offers real scope to advance within the organisation such as early responsibility, a broadening mandate, and progression into senior technical and advisory roles.
• Industry-standard compensation with additional variable pay for high-performing individuals.
