About the Role
We’re looking for a remote Bookkeeper & Accounting Associate to own month-end bookkeeping across a portfolio of SMB clients — keeping the books clean, the reconciliations tight, and the team informed.
In this role, you’ll work primarily in QBO and Xero, processing transactions, reconciling bank and credit card accounts, and generating financial statements for review. You’ll also support technical setup and administration within our cloud accounting platforms and handle ad-hoc client queries routed through a Team Lead — with the opportunity to become more directly client-facing as trust builds.
This role exists because our senior team members are ready to step into leadership and mentorship — and we need someone who can take the bookkeeping work off their plate and run with it. The firm is growing aggressively, with a strong client pipeline and a potential acquisition on the horizon, so there’s both immediate work to do and real runway for someone who joins at the right moment and performs.
Our IDEAL CANDIDATE brings 3–5 years of experience in bookkeeping or junior accounting roles. You’re genuinely tech-savvy — you’ve already worked AI tools into your workflow and know how to find answers before you ask for them. You operate with a sense of urgency, come to conversations with problems already half-solved, and always look for a better way. Your energy and cadence raise the bar for the people around you. Clients and teammates can count on you — your work is accurate, your communication is proactive, and your reliability is felt. You take feedback actively, not personally, because you’re always looking to improve — and you understand that at a premium advisory firm, clients should feel the difference, and teammates should feel the relief.
Performance Metrics: Your performance will be measured by the accuracy and timeliness of client deliverables, clear communication of outstanding items, and your ability to take on increasing responsibility with decreasing hand-holding — assessed through quarterly evaluations.
Reporting Structure: You’ll collaborate closely with everyone on the team. This position reports directly to the Team Lead.
You’ll be doing things like:
- Month-End Bookkeeping: Reviewing bank and credit card statements; importing transactions from connected bank feeds or client-supplied PDFs and Excel files (converting to CSV as needed); categorizing and reconciling all accounts in QBO or Xero; flagging unclear items and communicating with the Account Manager for clarification; generating financial statements for review; ensuring books are closed accurately and notifying teammates upon completion
- Financial Reporting: Producing monthly financial statements for team review; proactively flagging material month-over-month variances (e.g. rising expenses, declining revenue, unusual one-offs) and surfacing observations to the team
- Historical & Catch-Up Work: Performing forensic bookkeeping on older periods; working efficiently through historical records; knowing when to deep-dive vs. when accuracy has diminishing returns given its impact on current financials
- Technical Administration: Configuring QBO and Xero accounts; setting up bank feeds, bank rules, and third-party integrations; converting clients from legacy or alternative platforms as needed
- Client Services: Responding to basic QBO/Xero maintenance questions; researching common financial queries (e.g. purchase vs. lease, salary vs. dividends) and presenting an initial recommendation to the team before client delivery — primarily over email, with potential to grow into more direct client interaction over time
- Process Improvement & Admin: Maintaining and updating SOPs; keeping cloud file storage organized and current; contributing ideas for more efficient workflows when you spot them
Skills & Qualifications
- 3–5 years of prior experience in roles like Bookkeeper, Junior Accountant, or Accounting Technician, or related
- Solid, hands-on proficiency in QBO and/or Xero — you’ve worked in these platforms regularly and can navigate them without guidance
- Strong grasp of core bookkeeping principles: transaction classification, bank reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Comfortable working with PDF-to-CSV conversions and importing data into accounting platforms
- Competent in Microsoft Excel — you know your formulas, can manipulate and clean data sets, and aren’t manually doing what a function could do in seconds
- Actively uses AI tools as part of your day-to-day workflow — for research, efficiency, drafting, and problem-solving
- A self-starter who can hit the ground running with minimal training and knows when to dig in vs. when to escalate
- Detail-oriented and accurate — you catch what others miss and hold the line on quality
- Clear written communicator — you document cleanly, flag issues proactively, and write professional client-facing emails
- Receptive to feedback and genuinely growth-oriented — you don’t take constructive input personally; you use it
- Empathetic, patient, and energetic — you operate at a high cadence without sacrificing care
Bonus if you also have:
- ACCA or CPA designation, or actively working toward one
- Experience with Canadian tax returns or year-end preparation
- Exposure to variance analysis or more advanced financial reporting
- Experience working at an accounting or advisory firm (vs. purely in-house)
- Familiarity with our tools: QBO, Xero, Microsoft 365 (Excel, Teams, Outlook), Dext, ChatGPT, Claude
Position Details
Working Hours: 4 hours of required overlap between 8AM–1PM MT (Calgary time), with remaining daily hours asynchronous. Adjusts with Daylight Saving Time.
Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours/week), Exclusivity Preferred
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field — or equivalent, demonstrable work experience
Level: Intermediate (3–5 years of relevant work experience)
Compensation: ~CAD $1,254–$1,697 (INR 85K–115K) per month, based on experience. Structured as a Consultant Agreement (independent contractor), meaning you’ll be responsible for your own taxes, benefits, and insurance.
