The Role
We’re hiring an engineering lead to anchor a workstream—voice AI, EHR integrations, or platform/infra—and lead a small pod of engineers shipping into it. This is a hands-on role: you’ll still write code, review PRs, and be in the weeds on the hardest problems on your team.
You’ll own the technical direction of your area, mentor SDEs, and partner with the director of engineering on hiring, planning, and delivery. If you want a path that keeps you close to the code while growing into broader leadership, this is it.
What You’ll Own
Pod leadership—lead a team of 3–6 engineers (SDE 1–3); run standups, set priorities, unblock the team
Hands-on engineering—~50–60% of your time is still coding, reviewing, and debugging
Technical direction for your workstream — own the design and architecture of systems within your domain
Delivery—break down roadmap items, scope work, and hold the pod accountable to shipping
Mentorship—grow SDE 1s into SDE 2s and SDE 2s into SDE 3s; give direct, useful feedback
Code quality and standards—set the bar in your area: testing, observability, incident response
Cross-pod collaboration— work with other leads on shared platform decisions and dependencies
What We’re Looking For
Must-Have
– 5+ years of software engineering, with at least 1–2 years leading a team or workstream (tech lead, EM, or similar)
– Strong hands-on engineer — you can still ship a feature or debug a production issue end-to-end
– MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) and/or Python backend systems
– Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes—you can deploy, debug, and reason about a containerized service in production
–AWS or Azure — comfortable with cloud deployments, IAM, networking basics
– Has led at least one non-trivial system from design to production
– Direct, clear communicator — gives feedback without softening it into uselessness
Strong Plus
-Voice AI / conversational AI — real-time speech, STT/TTS, telephony (SIP/WebRTC), or LLM-powered agents
– Healthcare domain knowledge — HIPAA, EHR integrations (HL7/FHIR), or prior health tech work
– Experience with EHR platforms (ECW, Practice Fusion, Epic, RingCentral Health)
– Bare-metal / on-prem experience in addition to cloud
– Familiarity with Claude Code or similar AI-assisted development tools—we mandate their use across the engineering team
Mindset
– Bias toward execution — gets things done and expects the same from the pod
– Comfortable with ambiguity—VoxyHealth is growing fast; not everything has a playbook yet
– Player-coach mentality — happy to write code today, lead a design review tomorrow, run a 1:1 in the afternoon
– Owns outcomes, not just tasks—when something on your team breaks, you own getting it fixed and preventing it from happening again
What You’ll Manage
– A pod of 3–6 engineers focused on one workstream (voice AI, EHR integrations, or platform/infra)
– The technical roadmap and architecture for that workstream
– Pod-level process: standups, sprint planning, retros, on-call rotation within your area
